Join the Movement: How to Compost with Alianza Cero Basura in Todos Santos & Pescadero

Protecting the incredible environment of Baja California Sur takes a community effort. One of the most impactful ways we can help is by rethinking our waste. That is why Alianza Cero Basura has launched an Organic Waste Collection System for the communities of Todos Santos and Pescadero!

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to divert organic waste away from our local landfills. Whether you are a household or a local restaurant, joining the route is simple, clean, and highly rewarding.

Here is exactly how the system works and how you can get started today.

The Basic Collection: 6 Simple Steps

  • Step 1: Sign up for collection. Getting started is as easy as sending a WhatsApp message to +52 612 161 1596. The team will take your details, process your payment, and add you to the collection route at whatever frequency works best for you.
  • Step 2: Receive your bucket. Once you are onboarded, you will receive a specialized bucket with a lid, along with some sawdust. It is highly recommended that you store this bucket in a cool, dry place and ensure the lid remains sealed at all times when there are organics inside.
  • Step 3: Fill it with organics. You can fill your bucket with a variety of everyday scraps, including fruits, vegetables, eggshells, leftover coffee, and teabags. You can also include coffee filters (as long as they contain no plastic) and unlaminated, grease-free paper or cardboard. These items are welcomed by all of the program’s composters.
  • Step 4: Get ready for collection. You never have to guess when pickup day is. You will be automatically notified the day before and given an estimated collection time so you can have your bucket ready. You also have the flexibility to confirm or defer the collection.
  • Step 5: Bucket Swap. On collection day, the collector will take your organics away and leave you with a fresh, clean bucket. You will subsequently receive an automatic notification that confirms the collection and tells you the exact weight of your diverted waste.
  • Step 6: Destination. Once the route is complete, the collector delivers the organics to local composters, regenerative farmers, and pig farmers. Your waste is entirely repurposed to make nutrient-rich compost and to feed local animals.

Going the Extra Mile: Complex Organics

If you are willing to do a little extra, Alianza Cero Basura would love to collect even more of your organic waste. The program is designed to also handle “complex” organics, which are directed to specific composters and pig farmers. Complex organics include meats, fish, bones, dairy, flours, and restaurant leftovers.

Here is how to properly manage complex organics for pickup:

  1. Find a container: Find a reusable container with a lid, such as an old yogurt container, that you can keep in your refrigerator or freezer. If you do not have one, just ask the team—they have tons available!.
  2. Fill the container: Place your complex organics into this container throughout the week. Keep it stored in the freezer and do not take it out until it is time for your scheduled collection.
  3. Put the container out: When you place your main bucket out for collection, simply place the complex organics container inside or on top of it. The collectors will empty these contents into their specific “pig food” bucket and leave your reusable container behind for you to use again.

Together, we can make a massive difference in reducing landfill waste. Reach out to the Alianza Cero Basura team on WhatsApp today to get your bucket!
